Violence against women
This morning around 6am, a woman was sexually assaulted, robbed and locked in a freezer at a coffee shop in the Harbor. SCPD has been on scene all day collecting evidence. SCPD has not given out any details of the event other than the attached flyer. Please be careful out there!

The sexual assault has been allover the news, with information. A lot more then this flier which I'm sure you stole from the area. Did you put this flier back where you stole it from?

Thats all you have to say? I was handed this flier by a cop to prominently hang in the window of my business, which I cleared some window space so it could be front and center. Thanks for the presumption jerk!

Gillian Greensite has an interesting editorial on the subject of SCPD incompetence and/or indifference on the rape issue at
http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/ci_8512245?IADID=Search-www.santacruzsentinel.com-www.santacruzsentinel.com

She also responds to various questions and criticisms in the Comments section that follows.

I've interviewed Gillian on this subject a number of times in the last year on my Free Radio Santa Cruz Show. The interviews are archived if anyone's interested in hearing them and there was some on-line discussion as well at the time.

Apparently the SCPD and the City Council weren't listening.

You know what Robert? Not everything in town is about you. This story is about a woman that was raped. Not you. Stop trying to inject yourself into everything that happens in this town. You are out of line here as you know nothing of this incident and bring nothing but hatred for this city into the case.
SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU SELF CENTERED ASSHOLE.

Calm down Sarah PGS!! Robert is not supporting rape, or downplaying the gravity of it. However, how the SCPD conducts rape investigations IS a subject of concern for the community. Robert's posting of the links to those concerns ARE extremely relevant to this posting. Your "going off" against him is not.

Spot on comments Sarah. Some people are very quick to condemn before they know the facts or let people do their job. Support for this poor girl should be offered, not self aggrandizing statements of hate.
I feel for this girl and hope the police are able to apprehend the person that did this to her.

I just posted what I knew of the story. My business is in the same area where the incident occurred and the cops were in the area all day asking questions. A woman that I interact with everyday was brutally assaulted, and it hit close to home as my wife and young son spend considerable time in the area. The young woman should be the focus here, she will obviously need support, not a bunch of blaming and hyperbole. This shit is real, not some made up CSI Miami TV bullshit. I posted this as a warning to the women in the community to take extra vigilance in knowing their surroundings. That was my intention, period. I didn't know it was going to cause a shit storm.

One person opened up and blamed me for stealing the sign.
Then this whole SCPD controversy.
Then someone says they won't shop at my business.

What utter crap!

Its no wonder things are so fucked up. People with the best intentions get crapped on left and right. Maybe if people could just interact a little more politely we could get something good in our community. I'm half tempted to post the name of my business for you to come on down and discuss your issues in person. F-it, Im over it.

Everyone just be careful and keep an eye out for your brothers and sisters.

This is amazing.

A person says on here that they tried to help a rape victim out by posting a sign in their shop window asking for information to catch the person that did it. They are rewarded for their effort with a reply that someone want's their name so as not to support their business.

Robert makes no mention of concern for a young rape victim and launches into his typical me me me tirade of how the police in Santa Cruz are inept. While stating no information about the case. Someone calls him to task on this and gets bashed by Becky, no wonder to be honest, accusing the person of sexism. The person said nothing about how men should not be able to comment. A typical diversionary tactic Becky uses over and over again. Take the heat off Robert by accusing someone else of wrongdoing.

A girl was raped. Show a little compassion for her. Show some support for those trying to help catch the criminal.

This is not a time for promoting ones personal agenda.
Being a man, I have no concept of what it is like to be raped, other than some traumatic stress I experienced caused by being concerned about someone else's mostly unknown living situation. That was bad enough for me thank you.

I usually go to downtown Santa Cruz when I visit and have not shopped much along East Cliff. I will make an effort to change that in the near future, now that the flyer has been posted in one person's store window.

You are welcome to e-mail me with the name of your store so I will be sure not to miss it next time I visit. I will keep the name confidential if you wish. Thanks.
